Bloomington Career Academy (BCA)
Heyworth High School is committed to preparing students for life after graduation by offering opportunities to gain marketable vocational skills and work experience. Our goal is to equip students with the skills needed for entry-level jobs or further training through community colleges, technical schools, and apprenticeships.
To expand these options, Heyworth High School partners with the Bloomington Career Academy (formerly the Bloomington Area Career Center). This program is available to Juniors and Seniors and offers specialized courses not available at Heyworth. Students attend for four periods per day (earning two credits per year) and transporation is provided for afternoon programs only.
Admission Criteria for the Bloomington Career Academy (BCA):
- Must be at Junior class standing (with at least 12 credits by the end of sophomore year).
- Must pass all courses taken at Heyworth High School in the semester prior to enrollment.
- Must have no more than 10 days absent (excused or unescused) prior to enrollment.
- Each student's disciplinary record will also be considered.
- Students must exhibit appropriate study habits and citizenship traits.

Esthetician
Dual Credit Courses
This course is a survey of the field of economics with an emphasis on agricultural management and
economic analyses of current agricultural, resource, and environmental policies. This course is an
introduction to working in agribusiness in today’s competitive environment. Worth 3 credits through
Heartland Community College with a passing grade.
INTRODUCTORY HORTICULTURE (AGRI 120)
This course provides a general introduction to the principles of plant growth and development as they
apply to the wide range of horticultural (fruits, vegetables, greenhouse, turf, nursery, floral and
landscape) crops and the industries related to production, marketing and utilization of horticultural
crops. Worth 3 credits through Heartland Community College with a passing grade.
INTRODUCTION TO ORAL COMMUNICATION (COMM 101)
This is an introductory course in public speaking, with the dual goals of helping students understand
basic communication principles and improving their oral communication skills. The course emphasizes
preparing, selecting, organizing, and delivering oral messages, as well as analyzing and evaluating the
speaking-listening process. Taught by a professor from Heartland Community College (HCC) at
Heyworth High School. Worth 3 credits through Heartland Community College with a passing grade.
INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION (EDUC 101)
This course provides an introduction to the American education system and teaching as a profession.
Throughout the course students will be offered a variety of perspectives on education including:
historical, philosophical, social, legal, and ethical issues in a diverse society. A study of organizational
structure and school governance will also be included. An internship component is required. Worth 3
credits through Heartland Community College with a passing grade.
CRITICAL READING AND WRITING (ENGL 101)
In this course, students will improve their writing by learning about the integrated relationship
between critical reading and writing skills. Students will explore how genres of communication shape
the acts of reading and writing, and in the process, will learn how to become responsible and ethical
readers, writers, and designers of various kinds of texts. Students gain exposure to a wide range of
tools and skills available and necessary to 21st century readers and writers including collaboration
techniques, visual design principles, and how to effectively control surface features of their writing.

MULTIMODAL COMPOSITION (ENGL 102)
Students will put rhetorical principles into useful cultural practice via researching, designing, creating,
and sharing multimodal composition projects that contribute to real academic or career purposes and
audiences. Conceptual knowledge of genre, textual control, document design, writer responsibility, and
collaboration will be applied as students research academic or career interests. Students will learn and
apply both primary and secondary research skills, and will compose projects that successfully employ
genre-appropriate reasoning, formats, and structures. With ENGL 101, fulfills English IV graduation
requirement. Worth 3 credits through Heartland Community College with a passing grade.
This course covers the major political, social, economic and diplomatic trends that have shaped the
United States from the early explorations of America to the Civil War and Reconstruction. With HIST
136, fulfills U.S. History graduation requirement. Worth 3 college credit hours with a passing grade.
This course covers the major political, social, economic and diplomatic trends that have shaped the
United States from the end of the Civil War to the present. With HIST 125, fulfills U.S. History

INTRODUCTION TO HUMANITIES (HUMA 101)
Introduction to the Humanities is the study of social and cultural values as expressed through the major
art forms, including painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, drama, music, dance, film, and
photography. The course will examine the elements and formal qualities that are characteristic of each
art form, the relationships between the arts, and the social and historical contexts from which they
developed. Taught by a professor from Heartland Community College (HCC) at Heyworth High School.

INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS (MATH 141)
This course focuses on mathematical reasoning and the solving of real-life problems, rather than on
routine skills and appreciation. Descriptive methods (frequency distributions, graphing and measures of
location and variation), basic probability theory (sample spaces, counting, factorials, combinations,
permutations, and probability laws), probability distributions (normal distributions and normal curve,
binomial distribution, and random samples and sampling techniques), statistical inference (estimation,
hypothesis testing, t-test, and chi-square test, and errors), correlation and regression, and f-test and
analysis of variance. An emphasis is placed on calculating statistical results using appropriate
college credit hours with a passing grade.
INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY (PSY 101)
This course provides an introduction to psychology as the scientific study of human and animal
behavior with an emphasis on the factors that influence human behavior and mental processes. This
course also focuses on how we may use knowledge and theories of physical and emotional/cognitive
growth, learning, personality functioning and coping, and social interactions in our everyday lives.

LIFE SUCCESS (SCED 105)
This course will help students gain awareness of their academic career and personal selves and
facilitate development in each of these areas. Focus will be placed on gaining knowledge of each self,
identifying areas of strength and those needing improvement and mastering the tools necessary to
achieve growth in these life areas. The three main topics are Personal Success, Career Success, and
College Success. Worth 3 credits through Heartland Community College with a passing grade.
INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY (SOC 101)
This course provides an introduction to the scientific study of society. Topics include the history of the
discipline, culture, groups, organizations, bureaucracies, deviance, power and inequality, race/ethnicity,
class, gender, education, the economy, the political institution, family, religion, and social change.
Students will develop a critical understanding of social forces. Taught by a professor from Heartland
