Dr. Katie Bruemmer, High School English

Welcome to High School English,
I am glad to share this school year with you at Heyworth Jr/Sr High School.  I have had the pleasure of teaching since 1997 in a variety of classrooms in Bloomington, Chicago, Champaign, St. Louis, and here in Heyworth since 2007.

I grew up in Peoria, and attended the University of Illinois for an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education.  While living in the St. Louis area, I completed a Masters in Secondary Education, English at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. We moved back to Central Illinois, and I finished a Doctorate in Education from Illinois State University in 2018.

I am blessed with a wonderful and supportive husband and three children.  Together we like to take long road trips, watch movies, and have impromptu dance parties!

I currently teach English 2, the sophomore Speech Communication class, English 101/102, the Heartland Community College dual credit writing courses, and English 111, a dual credit college-level literature class.

I am convinced that good writing is one of the most difficult skills to master, but it is worth the effort.   Clear writing involves clear thinking which is usually the result of lots of reading (and thinking).  Knowing the pleasure of a story well-told is like magic, and I hope that I can provide some magical moments in your high school career. If nothing else, I hope that you read something that makes you think and write something that makes others think!
